[Culture] Breaking the Boundaries: Exploring the Rise and Trends of Genderless Fashion
In the 2020s, with the fashion industry
embracing diversity and social media becoming a powerful platform for
self-expression, genderless fashion has emerged as a prominent trend. This
movement challenges the traditional binary of menswear and womenswear,
empowering individuals to dress according to their unique preferences and
identities, reflecting a growing societal acceptance of gender fluidity.
This shows a larger cultural shift towards
inclusivity and self-expression. As societal norms loosen their grip and
traditional gender roles are challenged, people are embracing genderless
fashion to break free from outdated expectations and explore their unique sense
of style.
For instance, Louis Vuitton introduced a
genderless look in early 2016 by using actor Jaden Smith as a model for women's
clothing and Zara launched its "Ungendered" line, a collection free
from gender labels in the same year.
Blurring the Lines: The Rise of Gender-neutral
Style
In the past, the distinction between men's
and women's clothing was differentiated, and clothing played a significant role
in expressing one's gender identity.
Building on the concept of unisex clothing,
genderless fashion breaks free from the limitations of menswear and womenswear.
It prioritizes individual expression, allowing people to style their outfits
without being confined by traditional ideas of masculinity and femininity.
In a blurring of fashion boundaries, both
men and women are defying traditional expectations by embracing garments once
associated with the opposite sex, creating a new wave of self-expression
through clothing.
Generational Shift: Gen Z's Embrace of
Fluid Fashion
In a move that embraces self-expression
over societal norms, genderless fashion has become a popular choice among Generation
Z (Gen Z), who are pioneering a new era of fashion that transcends the
constraints of gender binaries.
A recent study highlights a growing trend
towards genderless fashion. A 2018 Pew Research Center survey found that over
60% of young Gen Z consumers prefer genderless clothing options. This demand is
reflected in the expanding offerings of major online retailers like Wconcept and
Musinsa, which all boast over 1,500 gender-neutral items.
Furthermore, Google Forms survey by The
University Life found that over half (57.1%) of Gen Z survey participants were
aware of genderless fashion, with the potential to reduce gender bias and
expand clothing choices resonating with respondents despite limited personal
use of genderless products.
In the survey, Park Seo-yoon, a student at
Kyung Hee University(KHU)'s Dept. of Vocal Music, noted the increasing
acceptance of genderless fashion in performance wear. "While male skirts
and crop tops are still uncommon in everyday life, they are becoming more
prevalent on stage as fashion trends evolve," she said. Park further
emphasized the potential of genderless fashion to empower men's
self-expression. "Even if crop tops may not be the most comfortable choice
for men," Park argued, "genderless fashion still offers them a wider
range of options to express themselves through clothing."
Cultural Revolution: Fashion's New Era
Professor Gam Seon-ju of the Dept. of
Costume at KHU attributes the rise of genderless fashion to a societal shift. She
explains, "The dismantling of binary gender thinking and the growing
recognition of gender diversity, which is a shift largely influenced by
postmodernism in the latter half of the 20th century, has led to this new
trend.” This resonates particularly with Gen Z, a generation that prof. Gam
describes as valuing freedom and individuality, striving for a life unbound by
conventional norms and frameworks. “They view fashion as a key tool for
self-expression, readily embracing and experimenting with various styles,
including genderless fashion,” she added.
The impact of social media and the support
from high-profile designers have accelerated the acceptance and visibility of
genderless fashion, signaling a permanent change in the industry.
For instance, during the 2024 Spring/Summer
collection, prominent brands like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Prada showcased
genderless designs, solidifying the trend's status in the fashion world.
Especially, Prada challenged gender norms by incorporating traditionally
feminine accessories like headbands and high-waisted shorts into menswear.
Indeed, fashion designers have been at the
forefront of redefining gender norms within the industry. Jean Paul Gaultier's
"L'Homme-Objet" collection in 1983 challenged traditional menswear
with tight-fitting crop tops with open backs for men, paving the way for a more
inclusive approach. Gaultier further pushed boundaries in 1985 with his
"And God Created Man" collection, featuring men in skirts that sold
over 3,000 copies. More recently, Alessandro Michele of Gucci presented his
Fall/Winter 2020 collection titled "Rave Like You Are Five" which
aimed to dismantle Western macho culture. The collection included
gender-bending pieces like crop tops and baby doll dresses on male models,
accompanied by a message of celebrating masculinity "free from social
constraints." These designers' works exemplify the fashion industry's role
in breaking down gender barriers and allowing for free expression.
Prof. Gam concluded, "the genderless
trend serves as a powerful tool for individuals to break free from societal
constraints and assert their unique identities. It is a testament to the
evolving nature of gender and the ongoing pursuit of a more inclusive and
accepting society."
Shaping the Future of Fashion:
Genderless Trends and Their Impact
Looking to the future, genderless fashion
is set to redefine not just the fashion industry but also influence other
aspects of lifestyle, from fragrances to cosmetics.
Moving beyond a simple mix of masculine and
feminine styles, genderless fashion in 2024 promises a vibrant fusion of
streetwear, sportswear, and tailoring. These will all come together seamlessly,
creating a new fashion language that celebrates individuality and dismantles
the constraints of gender.
Prof. Gam believes the burgeoning
genderless fashion trend holds significant power to reshape how we express
ourselves. This move beyond traditional gendered clothing reflects a broader
societal embrace of individuality and diversity. However, as Prof. Gam
acknowledges, this trend also sparks debate, particularly among those with more
traditional values. These differing viewpoints highlight the need for a
comprehensive understanding and open conversation about the multifaceted impact
of genderless fashion on both individuals and society.
Genderless fashion has emerged as a
significant trend in contemporary fashion, transcending mere aesthetics to
embody a broader social transformation. This movement fosters a culture that
embraces diverse lifestyles and personal preferences, empowering individuals to
express their individuality without the constraints of gender.
The cultural landscape is expected to give
rise to even more diverse and expressive forms of genderless fashion, further
blurring the lines of gender in the realm of fashion.
