The 2026 Global Campus by-election for the General Student Association (GSA) has begun, with a single candidate team registered. Voting will take place entirely online from March 24 to March 26.
Ahead of the vote, a candidate public hearing for the GSA election will be held on March 19 at 8 p.m. in Room 210 of the Multimedia Education Building, Global Campus. The event will feature a keynote address, a presentation of the candidate’s pledges, and a Q&A session. The public hearing will be livestreamed through V.O.U.’s YouTube channel.
GSA Candidate, roote
For the GSA, a single candidate team, roote, is running under the slogan “Unshaken Foundations, A Future We Walk Together.” The team is led by presidential candidate Jeong Jae-woo from the Dept. of Postmodern Music, and vice-presidential candidate Park Seo-yeon from the School of Global Communication.
Roote’s campaign pledges are divided into five categories: academics, finance, welfare, communication, and convenience.
In the academic sector, the team calls for a review of the mandatory multi-major requirement, arguing that clearer and more transparent admission guidelines are needed. They also proposed introducing a grade eraser system and reforming the general elective course system.
Regarding finance, the team focuses on tuition-related policies, including restructuring the Tuition Deliberation Committee and establishing a permanent task force dedicated to tuition negotiations, aiming to increase student participation in discussions on tuition.
In the area of welfare, one of the most notable pledges is the expansion of Kyung Hee University (KHU) Cooperatives. The team proposes increasing on-campus Cooperative facilities such as convenience stores and bookstores to generate more non-tuition revenue, aiming to reduce the University’s reliance on tuition.
For convenience, the team pledges improvements to the Info21 two-factor authentication system, which was implemented after a hacking incident in February, with the goal of allowing faster access off-campus. It also plans to establish a student feedback body to collect opinions on improving the recently introduced AI ChatKHU service.
Finally, in terms of communication, the ticket aims to resume the “Dialogue with the President” program and improve communication channels between the GSA and various student bodies.
As the 2026 Global Campus by-elections draw closer, it is time for KHU students to review roote’s pledges and decide how to cast their votes. With only a single candidate team running, attention is now turning to voter participation and the level of engagement the by-election will generate across the Global Campus student community. Amid growing concerns over declining interest in student autonomy, the election will show whether the Global Campus can move beyond its Emergency Response Committee system and restore regular student self-governance.
