[Campus] How to: Course Registration and Credit System in KHU
The course registration period for the first semester of 2025 is approaching. The fourth grade students will have the first opportunity to apply to the courses on February 4. Then, in descending order, every grade level will have a day each for registration.
During the course registration period, the students are easily stressed since the results significantly impact the entire semester. Especially, the new students tend to be nervous about it as most of them have not experienced the University’s course registration system before. However, once learning the tips, students can use them throughout their university life.
Credit System in KHU
Prior to the course registration, students should check the maximum and the minimum number of credits they can take. These differ by major and among the individual student due to various factors, including applied scholarships, transferred credits from the previous semester, recent grade point average (GPA), and course withdrawal record.
For example, the minimum required credits for Kyung Hee University (KHU)’s Dept. of Sociology is nine per semester. However, several scholarships may require more credits, such as Keumsin or Hana, which specifies the students to take 12 or more credits.
On the other hand, the maximum credits of the department are 18 and 15 in the first and second semesters, respectively. If a student does not take all the credits in the first semester, up to three leftover credits can be transferred to the second semester. However, the credits from the withdrew courses are not subject to transfer.
Additionally, students who received a 3.9 or higher GPA in the previous semester can take three extra credits the following semester.
The students who are uncertain about their maximum credits can refer to the website for course registration or contact the department’s administrative office for more detailed information.
Scheduling the Courses
The next step is to decide which courses to take. Students can find the list of available courses on the KHU portal or course registration website. Jeon Ji-hyun, a student in KHU's Dept. of Business Administration, suggests that she chooses the courses based on their starting time, location, and difficulty. She further explained that she usually receives the information from her seniors or course reviews on the Everytime application (app): a community app for university students in Korea.
Although some students might have specific courses they are willing to take, it is important to double-check whether these courses are offered in the current semester since some courses are only open in designated terms. Moreover, applications for courses outside the major or that belong to a specified track are available specifically during the whole-school registration or checking periods. Also, several international student-only classes exist. Courses with specific conditions are indicated by notes written next to the course titles on the registration website.
Registering to Courses
The students who have been attending KHU can pre-register for courses, which is called the Wish List. The First Choice Courses of the Wish List can be chosen within the student’s available credit range for the semester. After selecting all the First Choice Courses, students can pre-register for Second Choice Courses, which can be chosen for up to 10 courses without credit limitation. Students can customize the order of the list based on individual priorities. On the course registration day, the pre-registered courses will appear on the Wish List tab, so students can conveniently access their chosen courses.
However, students must remember that pre-registration is not the actual course registration process and, thus, does not guarantee the availability of the course. Additionally, pre-registration is possible for every course, including those only available during the whole-school registration or checking periods. The pre-registration period for the first semester of 2025 starts at 10 a.m. on January 13 and ends at 5 p.m. on January 17.
As many students simultaneously register for courses, some students inevitably fail to apply for their wanted courses. Therefore, it is crucial to plan multiple ways so that missing several courses would not be significant. Moreover, it is too early to abandon hope after failing to apply for desired courses since there is a checking periods after the start of the semester. More information on course registration can be found on the academic notices tab of KHU's official website.
